Overview

STONE ISLAND is an apparel brand founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti in Ravarino, in the Province of Modena, Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy. Centered on research and development in textiles and fabrics, as well as experiments in processing, including garment dyeing, the brand offers outerwear, sportswear, and accessories, primarily for men. Its signature is a compass-motif badge attached to the left sleeve.

Concept

The LAB is the constant scrutinising and boundless investigation into the transformation and enhancement of fibres and fabrics, which brings discoveries of new materials and production techniques that have never previously been used in the clothing industry.

Sub-brands

  • Stone Island Marina 1984

A line derived within STONE ISLAND, centered on naval and maritime-inspired design, this series has been developed repeatedly since the 1980s. Built around the stripes and star/anchor motifs of “Marina,” which originated in SS1984, it reworks archival elements using current materials and treatments. While Stellina focuses on minimal performance and Shadow Project on an experimental system, Marina is the framework that makes the heritage clearly visible.

  • Stone Island Denims 2001

A derivative line established by STONE ISLAND to explore the denim segment in greater depth with a distinct identity. It was presented under the name “Stone Island Denims” from Fall/Winter 2001 and used a logo treatment distinct from the main line’s compass badge, offering denim-focused proposals. It ended with Fall/Winter 2009 and is now positioned in the archive as a second line.

  • Stone Island Junior 2006

STONE ISLAND’s official line for children. Like the main collection, it carries forward researched textiles, treatments, and garment-dyeing techniques, adapting them to children’s sizing and needs. It serves to connect the brand’s core technologies with the next generation. Unlike the adult-oriented Shadow Project, Stellina, and Marina, it is positioned to expand the lineup by age group.

  • STONE ISLAND SHADOW PROJECT 2008

A spin-off program launched by Carlo Rivetti through dialogue with ACRONYM® (Errolson Hugh / Michaela Sachenbacher), built on STONE ISLAND’s archive and development capabilities. Positioned as an exploratory platform for urban menswear that designs function and structure as a “system,” it advances research and development for the main collection from a different angle. While Marina and Stellina embody thematic and minimalist qualities, respectively, this is the line with the strongest project-driven character.

  • STONE ISLAND STELLINA 2022

Within STONE ISLAND, the “STELLINA” range brings functionality together through minimal design. Structured as a modular system intended for layering, each item is identified by a small star embroidery. While Shadow Project takes on exploration and experimentation, Stellina is positioned to provide performance dressing suited to everyday use within a unified set of rules.
