SUBSURFACE is a specialty womenswear brand launched in Los Angeles in 2020 by Kari Fry. Its official website describes it as an independent Los Angeles-based brand and community focused on unique pieces that are difficult to find elsewhere. The brand name derives from “subsurface scattering” and is associated with the image of light entering and spreading through transparent objects (and sometimes skin), reflecting an approach to design centered on the relationship between light, depth, and skin. Production takes place in Los Angeles, New York, and Milan.
Concept
Most of what I've designed so far feels like a play on light, depth, and skin.
