The brand’s shoemaking traces its roots to a business started by Earnest Woodford in 1908, and its operating company, Chancery Footwear, was established in 1984. JAZZ originated as footwear for competitors in British ballroom dancing and international dance championships. Based on the form and function of classic jazz dance shoes, the line is centered on simplicity, ease of movement, and everyday versatility. Shoes are still made in Britain at the company’s own factory in Northampton.

Drawing on the form and function of classic jazz dance shoes, it adopts a foot-hugging shape, soft materials, and a lightweight, flexible construction that does not rely on linings or cup soles. It presents leather shoes and sneakers that pair easily with a wide range of everyday outfits, and carries its design DNA forward into the later Classic Collection. While Hand Stitch and Hand Welted deepen the emphasis on handcraft and construction, CROWN JAZZ clearly foregrounds ease of movement and lightness.
