Handmade In England - Since 1908
Crown Northampton is a footwear brand from Northampton, England, founded in 1908 as Earnest Woodford & Son. It has been owned by the Woodford family for five generations and is run by Chris Woodford as managing director. Every sneaker, shoe, and boot is handmade to order using traditional methods in its Northampton workshop. Production is not outsourced overseas, and the company manages every stage in-house, from material selection to finishing. The brand also offers the Jazz Collection, which takes form and function as its starting point.

CROWN JAZZ is the line responsible for the Jazz Collection, which CROWN launched in 2016 as its first range for direct sales, and is positioned as the starting point for the brand’s sneaker offerings. Drawing on the form and function of classic jazz dance shoes, it adopts a foot-hugging shape, soft materials, and a lightweight, flexible construction that does not rely on linings or cup soles. It presents leather shoes and sneakers that pair easily with a wide range of everyday outfits, and carries its design DNA forward into the later Classic Collection. While Hand Stitch and Hand Welted deepen the emphasis on handcraft and construction, CROWN JAZZ clearly foregrounds ease of movement and lightness.

Introduced in 2018 as a core collection within CROWN’s sneaker range. While Jazz Collection expresses the lightness and flexibility of jazz shoes, Classic Collection translates Northampton shoemaking into contemporary, minimalist cupsole sneakers. Centered on the Overstone Derby, Upton Wholecut, and Abington Toe Cap, it features uppers with minimal seams and stitching, full lining in Northampton-made calf, cupsoles designed in-house, and multiple fittings. It is the standard line for everyday durability and a structured feel, with a clearly defined position distinct from the lightweight Jazz, the more handcrafted Hand Stitch, and the Unlined styles with their specialized construction.

A premium collection established by CROWN to bring its knowledge of dress shoe manufacturing in Northampton to sneakers. Unlike the standard cupsole construction of the Classic Collection and the lightweight, unstructured design of the Jazz Collection, this line offers sneakers built to dress shoe specifications, with every stage from shaping to finishing carried out by skilled artisans. Its features include hand stitching, natural leather linings and footbeds, cork filling, and Lactae Hevea soles. The collection includes the Harlestone Derby, Abbey Oxford, Everdon Mid, and Everdon Rambler, and has expanded its material offerings to include rare leathers. While Hand Welted focuses on welt construction and individual hand lasting, this line centers on the construction and hand-finishing of dress sneakers.

CROWN’s current line, this is a craft collection that incorporates traditional shoemaking techniques more extensively than any other. While the Hand Stitch Collection centers on the hand-finished details and material choices of dress sneakers, the Hand Welted Collection is built around hand-lasting tailored to individual feet, British calf leather, and a double-welt construction. Its signature model, the Ernest Wholecut, requires more than 40 hours of work and connects CROWN’s minimalist sneaker design with the traditional shoemaking of its sister company, E Woodford & Sons. Unlike the everyday sneaker offerings of Classic and Jazz, it is the group’s most specialized line, foregrounding welt construction and the shoemaking process itself.

Announced on May 1, 2026, this is a lightweight leather sneaker collection from CROWN. It presents a new lightweight construction in contrast to the full lining and cup soles of the Classic Collection, the soft, unstructured design of the Jazz Collection, and the dress-sneaker construction with full lining of the Hand Stitch Collection. It combines unlined Horween Dearborn vegetable-tanned full-grain leather with hidden construction derived from Northampton shoemaking, hand-filled cork, and Lactae Hevea soles. The collection includes the Harlestone Derby, Abbey Oxford, Thornton Wholecut, and Ashby Loafer, balancing softness that allows them to be worn barefoot with construction that retains its shape while following the foot.
