Overview

Salon is a Japanese fashion brand launched in 1999 by shoe designer Nobuko Sakai. It is sold mainly through select shops, and its shoes are particularly popular. The brand also considers functionality, for example by adding cushioning to the soles. Its designs are described as combining contrasting elements such as “cute bad taste,” “nostalgia within modernity,” and “a casual feel within a sense of weight.” In 2005, it opened its directly operated Salon boutique in Harajuku. After launching its second line, LOVE by salon, in 2009, the lines were consolidated in 2011.

A feminine second line that broadened the brand toward everyday wear

Launched in 2009 as SALON’s second line, it was a spin-off line focused on a more feminine

Launched in 2009 as SALON’s second line, it was a spin-off line focused on a more feminine and casual direction, in contrast to the main line’s emphasis on shoes. It translated SALON’s core idea of “mixing opposing elements” into more everyday expressions that were easier to incorporate into outfits, serving as an entry point that connected the brand’s worldview with a broader audience. Rather than foregrounding the main line’s experimental nature as it was, it occupied a position that added approachability and played a complementary role within the line structure. In 2011, it was integrated into SALON, ending its development as an independent line.
