The New American Premium
Wagoneer was a large SUV nameplate in the Jeep lineup that originated in the United States in 1962. Combining passenger-car-like comfort with four-wheel drive, it became a forerunner of the modern SUV as one of the first 4WD vehicles to adopt an automatic transmission. Industrial designer Brooks Stevens was responsible for its styling, and it evolved into Grand Wagoneer in 1984. It returned for the 2022 model year, but Jeep’s official website states that production of the standard Wagoneer has ended as of 2026. Its official positioning is “American Premium.”

Wagoneer is a premium extension line reintroduced by Jeep and an independent line within the brand family, expanding into the large luxury SUV segment through Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. While built on Jeep’s historic nameplate and 4×4 heritage, it differs from core model ranges such as Wrangler and Compass by emphasizing spacious interiors, upscale finishes, advanced features, and a dedicated customer experience. Stellantis’s official announcement explicitly describes it as a “premium extension” of the Jeep brand, positioning it not merely as a model name but as a premium line serving Jeep’s upper market segment.
