The Apostle of Appropriation
BIAS DOGS is a Japanese fashion brand launched in Tokyo in fall 2021 by graphic designer Kei Tanaka. The brand offers T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, caps, and other items featuring Tanaka’s artwork, with a focus on graphics. Influenced by appropriation art in 1980s New York, it uses sampling, cut-up, and remix as design methods. Its work is characterized by graphics that cross diverse cultures and a Dadaist approach, and is carried by select shops in Japan and abroad, including Dover Street Market Ginza.
