Overview

MOTO is a Japanese leather brand founded in 1971 by leather artist Hideo Motoike. Starting with made-to-order work, it focuses on leather goods such as shoes, bags, and wallets, and also offers clothing and silver accessories. In 1997, his sons Daisuke and Sakuto Motoike launched LEATHER & SILVER MOTO; the clothing line MOTOR followed in 2011, and the experimental production project MOTORATORY began in 2013. The brand continues to produce original items by artisans at its workshop in Tottori Prefecture, and also provides repairs and maintenance. The founder, Hideo Motoike, is also an artist who creates dolls and animal works using leather.

A brand launched in 1997 by brothers 本池大介 and 作人, sons of MOTO founder 本池秀夫, building on the leatherworking practices he established. It combines leather goods such as shoes, bags, and wallets with silver pieces informed by each brother’s experience in metal engraving and carving, extending MOTO’s handcraft across both leather and silver. In contrast to MOTOR, which focuses on clothing and workwear, and MOTORATORY, which undertakes experimental production, it is the core line centered on leather goods and silver accessories.

The name combines MOTO with LABORATORY, meaning “laboratory.” This production project began in 2013. It developed as a space for experimenting with new materials and forms of expression while carrying on the leatherworking techniques MOTO had cultivated over many years, and released leather goods such as wallets and accessories. Unlike LEATHER & SILVER MOTO, which handles standard leather goods, and MOTOR, which expands into clothing, it undertakes experimental production applying the brand’s techniques. It is currently on hiatus.
