Overview

MOTORATORY is a project launched in 2013 by the Japanese leather brand MOTO. Its name is a coined word combining “MOTO” and “LABORATORY,” and it was conceived as a place to pursue new challenges and experiments while carrying on the techniques MOTO had cultivated over half a century. It was run by the Motoike brothers and focused mainly on leather goods and silver accessories, while also offering leather shoes and other items. Its products explored new expressions of leather on the foundation of established techniques. The brand is no longer active.

The name combines MOTO with LABORATORY, meaning “laboratory.” This production project began in 2013. It developed as a space for experimenting with new materials and forms of expression while carrying on the leatherworking techniques MOTO had cultivated over many years, and released leather goods such as wallets and accessories. Unlike LEATHER & SILVER MOTO, which handles standard leather goods, and MOTOR, which expands into clothing, it undertakes experimental production applying the brand’s techniques. It is currently on hiatus.
