Overview

NikeCraft is a product line and art project launched in 2012 through a collaboration with Nike, led by American artist Tom Sachs. Centered on sneakers, it also offers apparel and other products, with notable designs including the Mars Yard, inspired by NASA’s space program, and the General Purpose Shoe (GPS) for everyday use. Based on the I.S.R.U. principle of using available resources to make what is needed, its products are designed as everyday tools, and the project continues as a 50/50 collaboration between Nike and Tom Sachs.

NikeCraft is a collaborative line developed over the long term by artist Tom Sachs and Nike. Centered on the Mars Yard and General Purpose Shoe, it has connected perspectives on NASA and aerospace concepts, sculptural practice, repair, and everyday tools with Nike’s material technologies and production infrastructure. While ISPA and ESC explore future functions and structures as part of Nike’s internal design research, NikeCraft is a relatively independent collaborative line that presents ideas about shoes and tools for everyday use, grounded in the artist’s creative philosophy.
