Overview

Hope and Thimble was a womenswear diffusion line developed by AVOCA, based in County Wicklow, Ireland. It was launched in 2000 by Amanda Pratt, then a director and designer at AVOCA, and presented mainly womenswear featuring hand-sewn details. The name derives from “hope,” reflecting Pratt’s childhood ambition to become a fashion designer, and “thimble,” a symbol of handwork. The line was stocked by retailers such as Liberty in the UK and expanded its sales overseas, but it later disbanded and has since ceased operations.

Hope and Thimble was an early clothing line launched by Amanda Pratt for Avoca. Unlike Avoca’s traditional woolens and products for its stores, it aimed to expand into markets such as the UK as a designer-led fashion collection. The line itself was later discontinued, but as an independent Avoca-associated fashion line designed by Amanda, it is positioned as a precursor to the later Avoca Anthology.
