Overview

BLUE SAKURA is a Japanese factory brand established in 2016, based on WHOVAL Co., Ltd., a denim-processing company in Kojima, Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, founded by Hideji Ishibashi. Centered on denim, it offers jeans, jackets, shirts, pants, accessories, and other items, making products that draw on the sewing, washing, and processing expertise of Kojima’s artisans. With “AUTHENTIC JAPAN DENIMISM” as its concept, the brand embraces the idea of creating things of its own, like the nonexistent “blue cherry blossom.” Since 2016, it has had Keiji Moriya as its director and has developed offerings such as DENTO as well as collaborative lines.

An offshoot line presenting a new interpretation through designer collaboration

BSYR / YOSHIDAROBERTO was the name launched in 2022 for a collaborative line by YOSHIDAROBERTO, created by Roberto Yoshida, and BLUE SAKURA. While BLUE SAKURA’s regular line and DENTO are centered on denim processing in Kojima and traditional Japanese modes of expression, BSYR combined the design sensibilities and factory backgrounds of both parties and was developed under the banner “FUTURE AND VINTAGE.” Official fashion week information identifies WHOVAL, which operates BLUE SAKURA, as its base and records the presentation of a Spring/Summer 2023 collection under an independent brand name. It can therefore be recognized as a collaborative offshoot line within the brand family, rather than a one-off product collaboration.

A derivative line that expresses Japanese traditions through denim

DENTO is a derivative line presented as a distinct product category on the BLUE SAKURA off

DENTO is a derivative line presented as a distinct product category on the BLUE SAKURA official website and explicitly identified as the “DENTO line.” Based on the parent brand’s denim processing techniques, it centers on expressing Japanese traditions and offers items such as denim made with washi yarn, sashiko, and kimono jackets. While BLUE SAKURA generally covers a broad range of denim products, including jeans and outerwear, DENTO is positioned to foreground its connection to Japanese culture through both its materials and design. Within the brand family, it can be regarded as an independent line that extends the parent brand’s techniques into traditional materials and clothing.
