Overview

hum is a stationery brand launched in Japan in 2009. It emerged from a collaboration between HIGHTIDE, a stationery manufacturer based in Fukuoka, and graf, a creative collective based in Osaka that works across furniture, spaces, products, and graphic design. The brand divides the process leading to the emergence of an idea into four stages: “think / catch / draw / stock.” It offers notebooks, pencils, and memo items as its main products, as well as items such as mobiles and stools, presenting them as “tools for thinking.” Saburo Sakata was responsible for creative and art direction.

hum is a stationery line created through a collaboration between HIGHTIDE and graf. Its name is inspired by the humming that accompanies the moment an idea comes to mind. The line included desk items that support ideas and work, such as memo pads, notebooks, pencils, and tape dispensers. While penco focuses on casual stationery for everyday use, hum is a line with a stronger emphasis on design projects and on serving as a tool for generating ideas.
