It’s fine to be stupid.
BOBSON is a Japanese denim and jeans brand whose roots lie in a sewing business started in 1945 in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, by Toshiharu Ozaki and others. It acquired the “BOBSON” trademark in 1969 and began full-scale development as a jeans-focused brand in 1970. Through products such as bell-bottom jeans, color slim jeans, and the 04 Jeans of 1992, it helped develop Japan’s domestic jeans market. With a commitment to materials and skilled sewing techniques at its core, it offers jeans and casual wear for men and women. Guided by the corporate philosophy “Good Life with Bobson,” it continues to pursue manufacturing rooted in Okayama and propose jeans for the next generation.

Thomaston is a derivative brand launched by BOBSON in 1976 for women and teens. It was established to extend the main brand’s jeans to younger women, adding a clear age-specific entry point to BOBSON’s women’s lineup. In 1988, together with Elgar Funkel and others, it also played a role in proposing women’s jeans by age group. Unlike TOO-TOO, which targeted women including young married women, and MM-8, which centered on casual jeaning styles rather than age, Thomaston was a brand specializing in young women and teens.

TOO-TOO was a women’s sub-brand launched by BOBSON in 1977, responsible for presenting jeans to mature women, including young married women. It ran advertising in women’s magazines that focused on the image of an independent woman, and helped extend BOBSON’s reach in a jeans market centered on younger consumers to women at different stages of life. While Thomaston served younger women, targeting teens, and MM-8 focused on everyday casual styles rather than age, TOO-TOO occupied a specialized position within the women’s lines, primarily targeting young married women.

MM-8 is a casual line of women's jeans launched by BOBSON in 1983. Rather than targeting a specific age group, it added a casual style focus to BOBSON's core jeans offerings, with the aim of making women's denim-wearing part of everyday life. While Thomaston, aimed at young women and teenagers, and TOO-TOO, centered on young married women, are brands aimed at specific age groups, MM-8 is positioned as a line for women that emphasizes everyday wear and casualness over the wearer's generation.

Intertrad is a sub-brand launched by BOBSON in 1992, presenting American and European traditional styles through two lines. Rather than expanding a single jeans style, it added BOBSON’s own interpretation to traditional American and European casualwear, subdividing the brand’s traditional style offerings. Unlike Thomaston and TOO-TOO, which cater to different age groups of women; MM-8, which focuses on everyday casual jeans for women; and BOBSON GENOESE, aimed at young men, its lines are organized around American and European style categories rather than gender or generation.

EARTH CULTURE is a specialist denim brand focused on authenticity, launched by BOBSON in the early 1990s in collaboration with Italian denim designer Adriano Goldschmied. Unlike conventional jeans offerings designed for mass production, it was developed around an approach that returned to the origins of jeans, with an emphasis on materials, processes, finishing, and vintage details. While BOBSON GENOESE focused on finishing styles for young men, Intertrad took a traditional direction, and MM-8 covered everyday casualwear for women, EARTH CULTURE was a collaborative line that placed the strongest emphasis on craftsmanship and denim expertise.

BOBSON GENOESE is a spin-off brand launched by BOBSON in 2005 for young men. It foregrounded BOBSON’s denim processing techniques, developed over many years, and was offered as design-oriented casual jeans for young men. Unlike Thomaston and TOO-TOO, which presented styles by women’s age group; MM-8, which focused on women’s everyday wear; and Intertrad, which presented American and European traditional styles separately, this line targeted young men and emphasized its processing effects and the presence of denim. Its name uses a word considered to be one of the sources of the term “jeans.”

WHEIR Bobson is a fashion denim brand launched in 2016 by BOBSON and Kishi Universe. It served to connect BOBSON’s trademarks and denim technologies with contemporary street fashion. Centered on denim, it combines material design, fit, and finishing techniques to offer a design approach distinct from conventional basic jeans. In contrast to Thomaston and TOO-TOO, which were developed for women in different age groups, MM-8, centered on casualwear, and BOBSON GENOESE, which foregrounded finishing techniques, it is a line that strongly emphasizes fashion and a designer’s perspective.

Bobson Sun Sister is a women’s derivative line launched in 2024 following BOBSON’s 2023 knitwear licensing agreement with Bole. Centered on denim-look pants made from high-tension knit, it has expanded its product categories to include tops, skirts, dresses, and jackets, combining the appearance of denim and stretch with functions such as moisture absorption, quick drying, and UV protection. Unlike women’s brands for different age groups such as Thomaston and TOO-TOO, and the casual jeans line MM-8, it is a licensed women’s line that brings BOBSON’s design into everyday wear made from functional materials.
