Bringing first-class craftsmanship into customers’ lives
JOHNBULL is a Japanese denim and casualwear brand founded in 1952 in Kojima, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. Based at its own factory in Okayama, it handles everything from planning and design to cutting, sewing, and sales, drawing on its advanced sewing techniques and sensibility. Centered on jeans, the brand proposes new values in workwear, military, and dress styles, while cherishing respect for “authenticity” that is loved across generations. Its official motto is “Bringing first-class craftsmanship into customers’ lives,” and it also offers derivative lines such as rebear by Johnbull.

Concept

Respect for products that continue to be loved across generations. Understanding the meaning, appeal, and rules inherent in each garment. On this basis, the brand expresses new values in jeans, workwear, military, and dress styles, grounded in an approach to making that prioritizes realism and quality.

Since the opening of its Osaka store in 2003, JOHNBULL has expanded its retail presence through directly operated sales and communication outlets. Through stores in various locations and its official online store, it has carried JOHNBULL men’s, women’s, and unisex products, as well as several derived lines, including rebear by Johnbull, Attick by Johnbull, makerhood, and WAISTRICK BY JOHNBULL. Rather than being a standalone apparel sub-line, it curates products from the brand family and serves a retail and communications role, bringing them to customers through store-exclusive projects and events. Store names are currently being reorganized, and the outlets function as points of contact between JOHNBULL’s sales network and its various lines.

A label derived from JOHNBULL that reworks VINTAGE, TRAD, and MILITARY foundations into contemporary clothing. Rather than simply reproducing past items, it connects vintage elements to modern styling, with a focus on selecting materials and production locations centered on MADE IN JAPAN, as well as offering genderless designs. In contrast to JOHNBULL’s broader denim and casualwear offering, it is characterized by a stronger emphasis on details and wearing feel rooted in vintage clothing. It is a vintage-interpretation line with a broader range of eras and categories than Sewing Chop O'alls and TOP KHAKI.

An original label developed from Johnbull Private labo, this concept-driven derivative line used a name and product range distinct from those of the regular JOHNBULL. It offered items such as denim tailored jackets, shirt jackets, and easy pants, combining materials for which JOHNBULL is known with elements of tailoring and patternmaking. In 2017, it also released collaborative products with a label on the TAKEO KIKUCHI side, and its production drew on its own factory in Okayama. Unlike the current group of specialized lines, the label served to present limited-edition projects and joint developments with external brands, beginning with directly operated stores.

A workwear label derived from JOHNBULL, grounded in empathy and respect for people involved in making things. Designed for use by craftspeople and artists in their workplaces, it offers clothing that supports both everyday life and work, focusing on aprons and uniforms. Unlike JOHNBULL itself, which offers denim and casualwear as everyday fashion, this label focuses on practical clothing with the wearers’ occupations and working environments clearly in mind. Unlike other lines centered on vintage or recycling, it places the relationship between makers and their workplaces at its core.

An upcycling project launched by JOHNBULL in 2018. It reworks its own products, vintage clothing, leftover fabric after use, and other materials by hand, transforming products into new garments instead of discarding them. Its products, including the patchwork series, each differ according to the combination of materials and the maker’s judgment, setting them apart from the regular denim and casual line. While ATELLIER WELLS BY JOHNBULL handles processing for new products, this line is positioned within the brand as responsible for reusing existing resources.

A bottoms-focused label launched in 2021, concentrating JOHNBULL's identity in pants. It centers on unisex pants incorporating easy-care features, multifunctional materials, and details around the waist. While the main JOHNBULL brand spans jeans, workwear, military, and dress styles, this line focuses on ease of movement in everyday life and a wide range of wearing occasions. It serves a different role from DENIM DELIGHT DAYS, which specializes in denim, and America-Made Denim, which centers on material development.

A denim collection from JOHNBULL that debuted in April 2022. Based on JOHNBULL’s denim planning and processing expertise, developed at its own factory in Okayama, it offers jeans with contemporary silhouettes and colors, designed with everyday wear in mind. It provides unisex sizes from 24 to 34 inches and is characterized by its role in presenting denim for a wide range of ages and genders. While JOHNBULL as a whole covers workwear, military, and dress styles, this line focuses specifically on denim fits and color expression, distinguishing its role from the material-development-oriented proposals of America-Made Denim.

A denim-focused brand launched by JOHNBULL from Fall/Winter 2023. Using US cotton as its primary raw material, it combines specialized spinning methods with environmentally conscious dyeing, structuring its products around the design of denim materials themselves. Its features include color ranges with multiple shades of blue inspired by traditional American colors, presenting raw materials, yarn, dyeing, and color expression as an integrated concept. While JOHNBULL itself centers on denim and covers workwear, military, and dress styles, and DENIM DELIGHT DAYS focuses on contemporary fits and colors, this line is positioned to foreground its efforts in material development.

A military-focused brand launched by JOHNBULL in Fall/Winter 2023. It dismantles and studies authentic military items and vintage clothing, then reconstructs equipment-derived details and oversized silhouettes to suit contemporary wearing conditions. While JOHNBULL’s main line spans denim, workwear, military, and dress, this line is distinguished by its focus on the construction, materials, sizing, and vintage character of military clothing. Its specialization in military wear is more clearly defined than that of Attick by Johnbull, and, unlike UNION HERCULES MADE, it is not limited to the archives of a specific American workwear brand.

WELLS, a denim processing manufacturer in Okayama Prefecture, and JOHNBULL collaborated on a label specializing in garment-finishing treatments, launched for the Spring/Summer 2024 season. It applies post-processing techniques such as garment dyeing, distressing, soiling, overdyeing, and washing to new products, giving workwear a vintage appearance. Unlike rebear by Johnbull, which reuses materials and products to create one-of-a-kind pieces, this label gives uniform products individual character through processing techniques applied before and after completion. It is positioned as a line that expands JOHNBULL’s processing know-how through collaboration.

A brand based on the American workwear brand HERCULES, launched for Spring/Summer 2025 under the supervision of JOHNBULL. HERCULES was a workwear brand offered by Sears, Roebuck and Company from 1908 through the 1960s. UNION HERCULES MADE references designs from the 1950s and 1960s while reworking denim jackets, chore jackets, work pants, overalls, and other items in contemporary proportions. Combining Okayama’s garment-processing techniques with vintage-style treatments, it is positioned as a specialist line centered on a specific archive, distinct from TOP KHAKI’s military focus and Attick by Johnbull’s broad interpretation of vintage.

A label launched by JOHNBULL in January 2022, it studies vintage materials, details, sewing, and specifications, then reconstructs them as contemporary clothing. Rather than reproducing past workwear or military wear as it was, it develops new materials based on the context and function of the original pieces and translates them into clean, modern silhouettes under the concept of “NEO VINTAGE.” While Attick by Johnbull broadly proposes vintage styling and everyday wear, this line places greater emphasis on the examination of fabrics, sewing, specifications, and patterns, with a design-focused approach.
