Overview

URBAN RESEARCH is a Japanese select shop and original label first opened by Urban Research Co., Ltd. in 1997 in Amerikamura, Osaka. Focusing primarily on menswear and womenswear, it offers items sourced from domestic and international brands, products developed in-house, fashion accessories, and lifestyle items. Under the concept of “new basic,” it proposes a wardrobe for adults with an urban, refined sensibility.

Concept

Sub-brands

  • URBAN RESEARCH DOORS 2003

Derived from URBAN RESEARCH, this lifestyle-oriented label proposes “wear, eat, live” through not only clothing but also food, home goods, and furniture. In contrast to the parent brand’s urban selections and wardrobe recommendations, it curates offerings with an emphasis on the environment, designs made to last, and everyday comfort. While Sonny Label focuses on relaxed casualwear and SENSE OF PLACE introduces trends, DOORS extends its scope from fashion to everyday life as a whole.

  • URBAN RESEARCH ROSSO 2005

A core womenswear label derived from URBAN RESEARCH, it offers high-quality items and playful styles for occasions ranging from everyday life to special events. While the parent brand curates an urban wardrobe spanning menswear and womenswear, ROSSO focuses specifically on women’s moods and occasions, developing its own collections that combine elegance and practicality. It has ROSSO MEN as an affiliated label and, within the group, serves to clearly present high-quality styles for women and ROSSO’s distinctive vision.

  • URBAN RESEARCH iD 2009

As a mainly menswear-focused line derived from URBAN RESEARCH, it puts forward the concept “IDENTITY & IDEA” and offers products that strengthen connections with Tokyo’s ever-changing street scene, culture, and trends. While the parent brand focuses on urban basics, this line is characterized by original clothing incorporating humorous ideas and collaborations with brands, individuals, and cultural scenes in Japan and abroad. Whereas ROSSO MEN is responsible for refined, practical menswear, iD takes on the role of foregrounding street sensibilities, unisex expression, and a youthful perspective.

  • SENSE OF PLACE by URBAN RESEARCH 2013

A fashion line derived from URBAN RESEARCH, with the aim of bringing global trends to a broader audience sooner. It presents a coordinated offering from apparel to accessories and incorporates global trends into everyday outfits through clear, simple styling. While the parent brand URBAN RESEARCH focuses on curation and a refined adult wardrobe, SENSE OF PLACE emphasizes how quickly it reflects trends and how easily they can be incorporated into everyday wear. Unlike Sonny Label’s relaxed feel and ITEMS’ basic approach, it is an independent line within the group that serves to disseminate trends.

  • URBAN RESEARCH Sonny Label 2014

A private label of URBAN RESEARCH, this casual line incorporates the free-spirited atmosphere of the American West Coast, shaped by the parent brand’s editorial sensibility. Centered on trends, basics, and relaxation, it offers clothing and accessories that are easy to mix and match for everyday wear. While URBAN RESEARCH centers on an urban wardrobe, Sonny Label focuses on a more laid-back, weekend feel and comfort. Whereas DOORS takes a lifestyle-oriented approach encompassing clothing, food, and living, this line broadens everyday casual style with a focus on apparel and accessories.

  • URBAN RESEARCH ROSSO MEN 2016

A men's label derived from URBAN RESEARCH ROSSO, it is responsible for a men's wardrobe distinct from the main ROSSO line for women. It offers products centered on shirts and coordinated sets, combining functionality suited to both commuting and everyday use with a neat appearance. While the men's line of URBAN RESEARCH covers a broad range of urban styles, ROSSO MEN is positioned as extending ROSSO's sense of quality and practicality into menswear, complementing the group's other men's offshoot lines.

  • ITEMS URBANRESEARCH 2018

One of URBAN RESEARCH Group’s original labels, this line focuses on clothing that is easy to incorporate into everyday life. While the parent brand selects domestic and international brands and curates a refined wardrobe, ITEMS URBANRESEARCH adds functionality and ease of styling to basic items, offering options that are easy to choose for everyday wear. Unlike SENSE OF PLACE, which puts trends front and center; Sonny Label, which emphasizes a West Coast aesthetic; and DOORS, which addresses broader aspects of daily life, it serves within the group as an entry point focused on everyday clothing.
