Overview

ANACHRONORM is a Japanese fashion brand founded in 2004 by designer Tomoki Tanushi, based in Okayama. Centered on denim, a local industry in Okayama, the brand offers garments that make use of processing, aging, and remake techniques. Guided by its stated aim of “creating new vintage for the next era,” it pursues craftsmanship intended to be passed down over time, combining design, materials, sewing, and processing under the keyword “evolution over time.” Its labels include AN LABEL, NORM LABEL, and context LABEL. The brand has also pursued international activity through participation in overseas trade shows in 2006 and expansion into Europe starting in 2009.

ANACHRONORM Clothing is a historical line developed by ANACHRONORM alongside Reading from Spring/Summer 2011. While Reading centered on four fictional characters and their backstories, Clothing took a step back from character settings and served to propose apparel with greater freedom. Inheriting ANACHRONORM’s accumulated techniques in yarn, fabric, sewing, and processing, the line broadened its expression toward contemporary everyday clothing not limited to a particular narrative. It is not included in the current official label list and can be identified as a past line of the brand.

ANACHRONORM Reading is a historical offshoot line that ANACHRONORM launched from Spring/Summer 2011. The line created items by imagining the lives and wardrobes of four fictional characters—Jack, Neal, Allen, and William—living in the 1950s and 1960s. While drawing on the brand’s processing and sewing techniques, it was distinguished by giving its clothes stories and character profiles. It was developed alongside ANACHRONORM Clothing as a line responsible for freer expression. In the current official brand introduction, it is presented as a line in the brand’s history, separate from the four current labels.

Within the ANACHRONORM brand family, ANSE-LABEL is the label responsible for sustainability and ethical production. It offers denim and knitwear made with COTTON USA, as well as items upcycled from vintage clothing and deadstock, extending ANACHRONORM’s processing techniques to the effective use of the environment and resources. Unlike AN-LABEL, which focuses on denim processing; NORM-LABEL, which emphasizes enduring staples; and context-LABEL, which reconstructs the context of the past, it is a line that clearly foregrounds responsible material selection and reuse. Products are currently listed under it as an independent label on the official online store.

context-LABEL is a denim label that extracts and reconstructs the contexts ANACHRONORM has accumulated throughout its history as a brand. While retaining a throwback perspective connected to past workwear and vintage, it adds a contemporary freshness and develops realistic items through ANACHRONORM’s core processing techniques. Whereas AN-LABEL handles a broad range of creative work and NORM-LABEL is responsible for universal staples, context-LABEL is positioned to focus the brand’s history and processing expressions on denim.

Within ANACHRONORM’s brand family, AN-LABEL is the core label responsible for creative work that develops techniques in processing, aging, and remaking, centered on denim, a local industry in Okayama. While focusing on denim, it also offers highly flexible designs and material proposals derived from it, and is positioned as the line that presents ANACHRONORM’s processing techniques and contemporary creative work most directly. In contrast to NORM-LABEL, which emphasizes universality; context-LABEL, which has a strong emphasis on context; and ANSE-LABEL, which is responsible for the sustainable field, it handles a broad range of experimentation and the development of main products.

Within the ANACHRONORM brand family, NORM-LABEL is a core line that proposes enduring values and designs unaffected by seasons. Guided by four elements—design, materials, sewing, and processing—it continuously offers items with the character of ANACHRONORM and presents the brand’s idea of “New Vintage” as everyday staples. Unlike AN-LABEL, which expands the expressive possibilities of processing, and context-LABEL, which reconstructs past contexts, it serves as a basic line designed for long-term wear and provides standards and continuity across the brand as a whole.
